CHAPTER 19

CARY

Thatch mumbled something I couldn’t quite hear. I was halfway down the steps, and it surprised me how fast I was moving. Instead of my usual clutching the railing and praying I didn’t tumble to the bottom, I was descending the stairs like an almost normal person.

“I couldn’t hear you.” I said when I reached the bottom, slightly out of breath.

“It was, um, interesting.” Thatch grinned. “What are you still doing up?”

Sleep and I were hardly friends, and knowing Cary was out with Joey made it even more difficult to drift off, but there was no way in hell I was telling Thatch about it.

“I don't sleep much. It’s rare for me to get over four or five hours a night.” I replied.

“Me too.” Thatch said with his huge, toothy grin. Come to think of it, I had a similar smile splitting my face. “Are you hungry?”

“Always, especially when it’s something you’ve made. You are one of the best cooks I’ve ever met.” I patted Thatch on the shoulder, and I noticed Thatch’s posture relaxing, and a slight flush inched up his neck.

“No, I’m not. You are falling in love with southern food, and I happen to be decent at making it. Let’s see what’s in the fridge.” Thatch reached out his hand, hesitated, then spun around and strolled into the kitchen.

I followed behind him, and it struck me that we had a strange awkwardness between us that I’d never felt with anyone else before. It was like there was something unsaid that needed to be spoken. I knew what I wanted to say, but was unsure of Thatch's reaction.

“Sit.” Thatch said, and I sat in my usual place by the counter. “What time is it?”

I pulled my phone out of my pocket. “Almost midnight. You must have had fun if you stayed out this late.” I was fishing for information about his date, but didn’t want to seem too obvious about it. Then my phone pinged. I glanced at the screen and saw a message from Sam.

I’m almost at Dad’s house

“Your fabulous son just texted me. He says he’ll be here any minute.” I slid the phone back into the pocket of my robe.

“Why on earth is Sam coming here so late?” Thatch said, and started taking food out of the fridge. “Might as well make a full meal. I’m starving, and Sam is always hungry. Did you invite him?”

“No. I haven’t spoken to him in days.” I replied, wondering why he was coming here too.

“Are you handy with a knife?” Thatch asked, and when I nodded yes, he pulled a bowl of round green things out of the fridge and set them in front of me. Next to the bowl, he placed a well-used wooden cutting board, then pulled a knife out of the block and handed it to me.

“What are these things?” I pointed at the bowl. “They look like tomatoes, but they’re green.”

“That’s because I’m making fried green tomatoes. Hope you don’t mind a little stink, but I’ve got some fish that needs to be eaten, so I’ll fry that up as well.
